Gear List for the 2023 DOOM
I am not sure what there is to say about DOOM that already hasn’t been echoed across the interwebs. While classified as a ‘gravel’ route — it’s a rugged and very challenging 390-mile course through the Ozarks of Arkansas. Highlighted by unrelenting steep climbing, anyone who challenges this route will be in for 43,000 feet of leg crushing vertical. Oh, and the water crossings. There are tons of them and you’ll have wet feet for the duration of your journey. There are no free miles in DOOM. You work for every inch of forward progression. Below is a complete gear list which I pedaled to the overall win and a new course FKT.

- Here is the core of the set up: Canyon Exceed (size L) with Shimano XTR 1×12 with 30T front chainring and 10–51 cassette, Fox 32 SC 100mm fork with remote lock-out, Ergon SM Men Team saddle (size M/L), Ergon GS3-Small grips, Lupine Neo light, DT Swiss XRC 1200 wheels, SPOT Tracker, Garmin eTrex 32x GPS, Maxxis Aspen 2.25 tires, Topeak D-Flash FS fender, one Gremlin Bell.
- Topeak BackLoader (size 6L) filled with Sportful SuperGiara bib shorts, Sportful Pro vest, Sportful Arm Warmers, Sportful Leg warmers, GORE Shake Dry hooded rain jacket, Outdoor Research Helium Wind Hoodie, Buff, Sportful warm gloves, Sportful wool socks. It should be noted I wore everything on this list except for the Buff.
- Topeak TopLoader filled with food
- Topeak FreeLoader x2 filled with food, FinishLine Wet Chain lube, Katadyn BeFree water filter, Topeak Water Bottle
- Oveja Negra Bodega frame bag (size L) filled with body / self care items, Chamois Butt’r, Toilet paper, x4 Tubolito tubes, bike repair items, paint stick for mud, Topeak Mountain DA G mini-pump, spare Lupine light battery, SOL Emergency Blanket, food.
Not pictured is a Apidura Hydration pack with a 1.5L bladder. Total water capacity for my full set up was 4 Liters. I never used or carried more than 2–2.5 L at a time due to the comfortable temps and ample water on course.
On my body I had a Limar Air Stratos helmet with a Black Diamond headlamp zip tied to it, Sportful SuperGiara jersey and Bibs, Sportful Gel short finger gloves, SockGuy SGX wool socks and Pearl Izumi X-Alp Mesa shoes
Overall everything on this list worked perfectly and I wouldn’t change a thing if I was to go back for the same non-stop effort.
